The Model Citizens Program is a program that allows mentored children to build plastic model vehicles and then to meet the operators of the vehicles.
Currently, the plastic models used are of police cars which provides the mentor and child ingress to meetings with police personnel but models of other service vehicles including ambulances, fire trucks, etc. will be introduced in the future.

Another batch of models that are being provided to progam children are of the SR-17 Blackbird aircraft, which is being used as a tie-in to the North Carolina Museum of Natural History's temporary exhibit, "SPACE: A Journey to Our Future," running from October 7, 2006 to February 11, 2007.
This interactive exhibit is the perfect activity site for mentored children to “follow some of the most exciting moments in science leading up to the exploration of space by man with a reenactment of Saturn V rocket launch, or command a motion-simulated mission to Mars as you navigate an orbiting space station to a recreated base camp on the surface of Mars."
